i am sorry for your misfortune.
"must have had a boost spike or something"..... did you see/feel anything? boost gauge, sound of detonation, etc. can help you diagnose.
verify bov connection and wastegate connection as these are critical for good performance and longevity. there's no way for me to pin point what happened (factor in 1000000 variables) but i have seen and dealt with many drivers that are new-to-turbo and kept on driving when the car was detonating (oblivious to the pinging) and people who connected the wastegate incorrectly. Of course, some "tired" motors just give up; high mileage and/or not properly maintained.
as far as what you should do next.... that's entirely up to you. if you are going to be happy with 360-390whp, find a stock motor that's in good shape..... and work with an experienced installer to get the job done. if you want 400+whp, go for a mildly built motor and get it custom tuned.
my z was turbocharged at 50k and now i am at 69k. bone stock motor. nothing "special" about my kit because i work here; same kit we sell to our dealers. i dont even have a custom tune. i run on the ecu reflash. it's daily driven (i have no choice, only own one car) and i track it 5-6 times a year on a road course. i am not gonna lie and say i never ever had a problem with it. but all were within my "assumed risks list" of owning an aftermarket turbocharged car and they were easily fixable.
unless you have all the capability (of fixing, building, modifying, etc), i would advise you to work with a competant tuner/shop/fabricator to achieve the power level you are wanting.
good luck.
